Lolita’s Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and will find ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not involved enough with them. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours each day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy going to the playgrounds and parks as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. Apart from being a great pet, they are also great pets for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or near children who may be frightened by their noise.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. It is a lengthy process and the owner must be patient and realize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, pledged to develop plans with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where to buy a macaw she could spend the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

Lolita's Diet
